Twitter is adding a new feature to help users figure out what’s “happening now.”
The company introduced a new feature today that will highlight sports games, breaking news, and other topics at the top of its users’ timelines.
The feature, which is now rolling out now to Twitter’s apps, puts a carousel of events at the top of your feed. Twitter says the “happening now” events will be personalized to each user based on their interests and what types of accounts they follow.
The company says for now the plan is to focus on sports, with football, baseball, soccer, hockey, and basketball updates, but other topics will be added in the future.
Tapping into one of the games in the “happening now” section is a lot like diving into a trending topic on Twitter. It surfaces tweets related to the event, as well as real-time game scores, which are pinned to the top of the feed.
In a tweet, Twitter’s VP of Product Keith Coleman said the company was “just scratching the surface” with the new feature for sports scores.
Say hello to 🏆 Happening Now — a new and simple way to follow a game on Twitter. With a live scoreboard & live timeline one tap away, it’s changed the way I watch games (whether at a 📺 or not). Rolling out today with ⚾️🏈🏀⚽️🏒 And we’re just scratching the surface🔥 pic.twitter.com/atv4wCBOju

The company confirmed the feature will start with sports and expand to breaking news, entertainment, and other topics over the next few weeks.
The update is just the latest way Twitter has sought to draw in sports fans by emphasizing live coverage. In August, the company cut a deal with digital sports network Stadium for its round-the-clock college sports coverage. Twitter has also played host to live streams of Thursday-night NFL games and MLB games.
By now showcasing professional sports front and center in its app, the company is further doubling down on its efforts to make Twitter the destination for sports fans.
