Home Secretary Amber Rudd has called for tech companies that provide “completely unacceptable” end-to-end encrypted messaging services to work with law enforcement.

Rudd’s interview with BBC’s Andrew Marr Show came after reports that the Westminster Bridge attacker, Khalid Masood, had sent a WhatsApp message prior to the incident that cannot be accessed because it was encrypted.

But it was Rudd’s comment that she wanted help from people who “understand the necessary hashtags” that caused hilarious reactions on social media.

Here’s the full quote:

“The best people who understand the technology, who understand the necessary hashtags to stop this stuff ever being put up, not just taken down, but ever being put up in the first place are going to be them.”

Uhm, what?

People on Twitter shared gifs, memes and jokes in an attempt to make sense of what the home secretary said:
